Kingston, Jamaica - Updated 6:52 AM PDT July 3, 2024

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Hurricane Beryl was roaring toward Jamaica on Wednesday with islanders bracing for heavy rains, damaging winds, and storm surge as the storm intensified into a Category 4 force.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Hurricane Beryl was moving west-northwest at 16 mph (26 kph) and had maximum sustained winds of 130 mph (215 kph).

The storm's center was located about 590 miles (955 kilometers) southeast of Kingston and was expected to pass south of the Cayman Islands on Wednesday night.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness urged residents to take precautions and follow instructions from local authorities.

The hurricane season in Jamaica officially runs from the beginning of June to the end of November.
